The west was symbolic with steep grade requiring additional motive power for goods trains. Of particular significance were the wheat trains Australia's valuable export grain supplies to Sydney for export around the world.
Here a 36 and Garratt are working hard up the grade near Borenore with a full load of wheat, including 4 wheel and bogie vehicles. In some ways the West remained steam a little longer than it might have because of the bumper wheat crop that year.
